But first, why are we here? Why should you be marketing your coffee shop in the first place? If you build it and you have a great product, they're going to come, right? Unfortunately, that's not true in today's competitive landscape. There are tons of different options when it comes to coffee. Right at home, Starbucks, McDonald's, on the fly, sit-down places, go to a friend's house. You are in a competitive market. Now, that's not to be fearful of because I know you can stand out, but marketing is about positioning your business in a specific place in the marketplace. Are you going to be the fast and convenient spot? Are you going to be the place to go hang out? Are you the best spot to meet up with friends? Do you have artisan coffee?

Marketing is about telling your customers very specifically your position in the marketplace. It's really important to do that because that's how you carve out the niche of customers that are perfect for your business. Let's get started figuring out how exactly to do that.

The first thing you need to establish is knowing your customers. Who are they? Are you right next to a college campus? Are they going to be college students? Are you next to a high school or elementary school where a lot of busy parents are going to be coming through? Are you looking to aim towards professionals? Are you by office buildings or are you kind of in a family neighborhood area and expecting families to be your customers? Understanding their preferences and who it is you're going to serve is going to influence everything from how you brand yourself to the services you use to the atmosphere you decide to set up. First and foremost, get clear on who the customers are for your coffee shop.

Step two, your coffee shop's vibe is crucial. That's why it's all about creating the right atmosphere. So whether that's a warm and inviting place, whether it's a fast and convenient place with a drive-thru, whether you offer free Wi-Fi, or whether it's kind of artisanal and you offer a bar for people to create their own craft or customize their coffee after you give it to them, all of those details are important, and it all goes back to point number one: Who is your target customer?

Now, you're also going to need to stand out, and that's where offering unique products is important. You have to offer unique blends or signature drinks, seasonal drinks as well. What is it about your products that make people say, 'I want to go to that coffee shop over getting coffee anywhere else?' Right, you've got to make sure that you move away from just being a commodity.

Step four, leveraging social media. Social media is your best friend. Regularly posting mouthwatering photos of your coffee and happy customers and people engaging in the way that you want them to is going to help you gain a following and turn that following into customers. Even people who are just passing by, they're going to check out your social media presence just to see what you look like, whether that's your Instagram or Facebook, and decide whether or not they're going to go in there for the first time. Create a social media following. Do so by posting regularly and posting photos of your coffee and food if you have it. And don't forget to engage with your followers.

Step number five, host events. Bring your community together. Host events at your coffee shop, whether that's book clubs, open mic nights, coffee tasting sessions. It's a great way to attract new customers and keep regulars coming back. Make your coffee shop the hub of the community. Do that by hosting great events, and don't forget to post about those events on your Google business profile. Hint, check out some other videos we have on how to grow your business by having a great Google business profile to go with your website.

Number six, collaborate with local businesses. Whether you partner with local bakeries or maybe artists or musicians, it's a win-win for cross-promotion and supporting the community. There's a lot you can do to offer your space to host things. There's a lot you can do to cross-promote, whether that's 'buy something here, get something at our place,' and vice versa, shared referral network. There are so many things that you can do. Think about and collaborate with other local businesses to think about how you can both use your resources to help each other grow.

Never underestimate the power of friendly service, and that's where excellent customer service comes in. A smile and a personalized touch can turn a first-time visitor into a loyal customer for life. You want to make sure that your customer service is top-notch. That's what turns that first-time buyer into a forever customer.

You now, who doesn't love a simple loyalty program? It doesn't have to be overly complicated. It can be as simple as a punch card. But reward your regulars with a loyalty program. It can be a simple stamp card or a digital reward system, a robust one that you pay for online. Doesn't matter. Easy and simple. The point is that whatever it is that you're doing, make sure your customers feel valued. A great way to do that is to reward their loyalty to your business.

And that last cup of coffee is not going to cost you what it's going to be worth in retaining the customers in the first place. So, there you have it.
